Hi there fellow Wing Chun fanatic —

It’s Rob here at WingChunLife.com. If you have a regular day job that requires a lot of thinking, or if you’re a student, or if you depend on a sharp brain to function on a daily basis, practicing “vigorous” Wing Chun could make you and your brain smarter and sharper!

This is great news because if you skip class because you think you’re too busy at work or school, I’m giving you proof today that getting to class could help you perform better.

Boosting your mental capacity during Wing Chun class could more than make up for the time away from work, and help you function at higher mental level. Plus, you’ll experience less stress, enjoy yourself more, and stay in great shape.

These studies weren’t performed on Wing Chun specifically. Rather, they measured the effect of strenuous physical exertion, like Wing Chun, on the brain and learning.

This is what the research suggests…

Pushing it in Wing Chun Class Could Lead to Better and Faster Combos…

In one study published in the Journal of American College of Sports Medicine, 21 college students memorized a random string of letters and pick them out from a list flashed at them. Then they were asked to do one of three things for half an hour: sit quietly, run on a treadmill, or lift weights. After, they were tested again.

This test went on for a few days and the students were asked to rotate between activities (sit, run, or lift weights). The result was the students were faster and more accurate after they ran compared with the other two activities.

When training Wing Chun, try to do so at a higher tempo to get the best brain benefits.

Yes. BANNED!

But narrow minded politicians goofed up and got it all wrong because the good guys need these raw street-fighting tactics to protect themselves from the insane who prey on us, our children, and our families.

Brisk Walking Improved Cognition Among Elderly

In a study at the University of Illinois, elderly people were split into two groups and studied for six months. The first group did stretching exercises, and the other group did brisk walking.

The study found that the walkers improved on cognition tests, while the stretchers did not.

New York Times article said of this experiment: “Why should exercise need to be aerobic to affect the brain? ‘It appears that various growth factors must be carried from the periphery of the body into the brain to start a molecular cascade there,’ creating new neurons and brain connections, says Henriette van Praag, an investigator in the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging.

“For that to happen, ‘you need a fairly dramatic change in blood flow,’ like the one that occurs when you run or cycle or swim [ed note: Or beat the heck out of a heavy bag]. Weight lifting, on the other hand, stimulates the production of ‘growth factors in the muscles that stay in the muscles and aren’t transported to the brain,’ van Praag says.”

More Exertion = Better Interruptability (i.e. Better Complex Cognitive Response)

In a four week study with mice, one group of mice were allowed to run freely on their rodent wheels. The second group was pushed harder on “mini-treadmills” in which the speed and duration was controlled by the scientists.

Tests showed both groups performed very well in water maze tests. But, the mini-treadmill mice beat out the other group in avoidance tasks, which scientists say demands more complicated cognitive response.

Physical Exercise, Like Wing Chun, Improves Learning and Strengthens the Brain Better Than Doing “Genius” Puzzles

Scientists recently discovered that exercise may slow or reverse physical brain decay and build a stronger brain, just as exercise does for the muscles.

Scientist had one group of mice live in cages that were filled with “enrichment” objects meant to stimulate the brain (but no rodent wheel). The other group had a running wheel.

As you can guess by now, the mice with the running wheel did better in cognitive tests than the mice surrounded by only a stimulating and “enriched” environment.

After doing autopsies on the mice, scientists discovered that the running wheel mice had about twice as many new neurons in the ‘hippocampus’ as the sedentary mice. It seems that brains bulk up just like muscles do.

‘Vigorous’ Wing Chun Could Stimulate Biogenesis — This is Good

A study in the The Journal of Applied Physiology found mice that exercised for at least two months had mitochondrial biogenesis in tissues other than muscle (like the brain). In other words, new mitochondria was created (mitochondria is the furnace of the cell).

Scientists believe that mitochondrial deficits in the brain has a role in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; and potentially, having more mitochondria in brain cells could help alleviate those conditions.

In any case, more mitochondria in brain cells may help reduce mental fatigue and improve your thinking.

Moving Muscles Sends Smart Chemicals to the Brain

After about a decade of brain/exercise research, scientists are pretty confident that physical exertion, moving muscles, and improved blood flow sends good chemicals to the brain, and improves learning and strengthen the organ.

For instance, scientists used drugs to mimic the effect of exercise in one study and found, again, that thinking and cognitive skills improved.

What’s revealing, however, is that these drugs cannot cross the blood brain barrier, which suggests to scientists that it was the other natural chemicals produced by the drug-coaxed “exercised” body that led to the enhanced benefits.

Bottom line: Get to class and don’t miss another one!

For myself, I’ve realized that I do better work after a Wing Chun class, and a fellow training partner, who is also a musician, says he gets more music written after Wing Chun workouts, too.

See you in class,
