I hope 2013 is even better than 2012. In order to help that happen, I have a couple of tips to make 2013 a bit more merry and healthy… drink some beer.
A Cold Beer After a Wing Chun Workout is Good for the Body…
This is what scientists say, not me.
Researchers from Granada University in Spain suggest a beer after sports benefits you because:
- It helps you retain liquid better than water when you’re dehydrated;
- The carbonated bubbles quench your thirst;
- Beer has plenty of carbs to replace lost calories.
Professor Manuel Garzon ran a study where a group of students did strenuous exercise in 104 degree temperatures (40 degrees Celsius).
Later, half were given a pint of beer to drink, the other half a pint of water. The beer drinkers had a slightly better hydration effect.
In a Telegraph article, cardiologist Juan Antonio Corbalan, who worked with the Real Madrid football team and Spain’s national basketball team, said he recommends barley drinks to professional athletes after exercise, and beer has the perfect profile for re-hydration after a workout.
“Beer is proof God exists, and that he loves us.”
Health newsletter, HealthEdge, shares these additional beer benefits:
- Helps keep blood pressure in a healthy range;
- Compounds in beer may help prevent calcium loss in bones;
- Beer is good for your heart;
- It can improve cholesterol levels;
- It may prevent heart attack and stroke (as a scientist in Boston discovered using an MRI);
- It contains beneficial nutrients such as selenium, iron, niacin, riboflavin, magnesium, B vitamins, and calcium.
Another tip is to choose darker color beers. These contain more of the good stuff like antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.
Beer with a higher concentration of hops, like many microbrews, is another good choice since it has more cancer fighting polyphenols.
Not Everyone Agrees…
My sifu doesn’t drink beer, or any alcohol for that matter. Unfortunately, beer is NOT the secret to becoming a Wing Chun master.
Other studies find that alcohol is a diuretic and helps the body eliminate liquid, leading to dehydration. Although, beer’s lower alcohol percentage may not have the same extreme effect as hard liquor.
Another reason to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum is it slows down protein synthesis. It hinders your body’s ability to build muscle.
And, alcohol is heavy in calories. So if you’re trying to lose weight or get more muscle definition, too many alcoholic drinks won’t help you achieve your goals.
The Solution: Non-Alcoholic Beer!
Researchers from the Department of Prevention and Sports Medicine in Munich, Germany (Klinikum rechts der Isar, Technische Universitaet Muenchen) found that drinking non-alcoholic beer weeks before and after a strenuous event (like a triathlon or a kung fu tournament) improved the body’s immune function.
Beer’s polyphenolic compounds, which are antioxidant, antipathogenic, and anti-inflammatory help provide this benefit.
And the prescription the German researches recommend: 1 liter a day of beer for the three weeks prior and two weeks following the event! (Remember, we talking about non-alcoholic beer.)
Either drink responsibly and in moderation, or chug down the non-alcoholic version. If you prefer the sensation of alcohol, you probably don’t need to drink a beer after every workout to get the benefits. But feel free to experiment and report back how your Wing Chun is affected .
